Week of April 16, 2018

Thursday Folder Fliers:

Budget Information:
As we move forward into the next school year, Douglas County School District is considering a Mill Levy Override and Bond to support our school funding and capital projects. An important point to note about school funding is that economic growth in Douglas County does not increase total funding to schools. In other words, the more taxes the state collects from Douglas County, the less the state will provide in order to meet the fixed total of $7,389. The first image below provides information about how school funding is provided to districts.

With the introduction of a mill levy override, schools receive additional funding on top of what the state provides. The image below shows the difference in funding with the addition of mill levy overrides.

The image below show the difference in funding for districts in another way.

Bond funding pays for capital improvements such as roofs, HVAC, technology, other building improvements, and new construction. Currently, Iron Horse is in desperate need of a new roof. The image below shows the bond funding for school districts since 2008.

If you are interested in more information or in supporting the effort to garner a mill levy override and bond, please contact Kirsten.Bloomfield@dcsdk12.org.

Spirit Week:
A group of our 5th grade students are partnering with the Student Leadership Council to raise funds for a redesign of the teacher's lounge. Each spirit day will cost $1 to support this project. 5th grade students have spoken with a variety of staff members to determine their needs and wants to create a teacher's lounge that is fun and functional. 5th grade students will be using the funds from our upcoming spirit week to purchase supplies (furniture, paint, etc) to accomplish this. 5th graders will partner with students from Legend High School's EDGE program to complete this makeover. Please help our students in this great real-world task! Spirit Week will run from April 23rd to April 27th. Days include:
  • April 23 - Neon Day
  • April 24 - What You Want to be When You Grow Up Day
  • April 25 - Crazy Hair Day
  • April 26 - Dress Up Like Your Teacher Day
  • April 27 - Pajama Day
5th Grade Project:
Students in 5th grade are studying the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. As they have been studying this topic, students have created infomercials and are collecting used Crayola markers to recycle. The image below represents the trash collected from our playground.

School Accountability Committee:
THE MAY SAC MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED

The School Accountability Committee (SAC) is an advisory committee, not a governing body, that advises the principal on school performance, budget priorities and parental engagement. The purpose of the committee is to inform, encourage and provide opportunities for parent and community members to be involved in the planning and evaluation of the school’s instructional program and quality improvement processes.  Each SAC is comprised of parents, community members, principals and teachers. Elections for Chair and District Accountability Committee Liaison will take place during our September 2018 meeting. If you are interested in running for one of these positions, please submit a paragraph about yourself and why you are interested to Kirsten.Bloomfield@dcsdk12.org by May 25th
